There’s No “I” in Team

Here at TexereSilk, our team works hard every day to design and produce the highest quality products for our customers. It’s not just as simple as coming up with an idea and creating it – there’s a long process involved and we couldn’t make it all happen without working together.

Even the best teams need some time to regroup and rethink the way things are currently being done. Right now, we’re about to head into the busiest time of the year – the holidays. We work around the clock answering emails and phone calls, taking orders, hand wrapping our products, and making sure everything is running smoothly. It’s best to go into this season with lots of energy and a clear mind.

A few days ago, we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity for some team building fun. We took a trip to a nearby facility to do some zip-lining and run through some obstacle courses. Doesn’t sound like team building though does it? Well, let me explain…

With the sun shining bright, we pulled on our sneakers and headed outdoors to begin our adventure. Some of our teammates had never zip-lined before and were quite nervous. Others had more experience (or maybe just don’t frighten as easily). We harnessed in, climbed high up into the trees, stepped onto a platform, and whizzed through the air cheering each other on loudly. Those who doubted themselves had the BIGGEST smiles on their faces once they got to the other side.

“I can’t believe I just did that! That was so much fun, let’s do it again!” I heard a few people shout from the treetops.

After a few more zips, we moved onto the obstacle course portion of the trip. We broke up into smaller teams and were given different tasks to complete. There was a hula hoop that we had to pass over each of our teammates without letting go of each others hands, there were puzzles to complete, there were tennis balls we had to carry across a field only using our heads, and all kinds of other crazy games.

Still unsure how this is team building?

Each task had different restrictions that made it challenging to complete. We learned how to play off each others strengths and weaknesses. If someone was particularly good at something, they spoke up and led the group with what was working for them. It seemed that for each task, someone else found the trick and helped the rest of the group work through it. We also discovered that if we tried something a certain way and it didn’t work, we stopped what we were doing, talked it over, and came up with a new plan.

Of course, there was quite a lot of giggling and laughing throughout the day, but that made the experience even better. It may seem silly, but all these things we practiced and learned while having fun, all come back to how we work in the office to better the company and our products.

We realized how important communication is, whether it’s good, bad, or indifferent. We all work in different areas of the company, but if we don’t communicate well with one another, everything could fall apart at any given moment – kind of like a set of dominoes.

We worked on our problem solving and leadership skills. Again, both these things go back into how we function in the office. There are days, especially during the holiday season when things are really busy, that we need to make quick but thorough decisions. The more we work on these skills, the more smoothly things run on a daily basis.

A lot of these challenges also helped us understand the importance of being flexible and adapting. Things happen that are out of our control sometimes, the important thing is how we respond to it.

Throughout the whole thing, we found ourselves being each others cheerleaders, smiling and encouraging one another – whether it was doing something new and out of our comfort zones or just motivating each other through each task. This is the type of attitude we take on every day. We help and motivate each other to get things done and build our confidence.

So in the end, we had an incredible day. We learned a lot about ourselves and each other, and we got to enjoy the gorgeous weather. Now we can head into the best time of year with big, excited smiles and great attitudes.

We’re ready!!!
